If you think of beach waves when you think of California girls, you're not alone. But when it comes to hair in Los Angeles, especially this summer, it's leaning more toward Once Upon a Time in Hollywood vibes, with homages to the '60s and '70s.
We asked several of the top artists in LA — including Anh Co Tran, Sal Salcedo of Nova Arts Salon in the Arts District, and Tanasia McClean, braider at Hair Are Us — to share the styles they've been turning out for their clientele in the City of Angels, and the themes were clear: The bob, bangs, the shag, and natural texture all made the list.
A modern bob takes inspiration from both the '60s and the sleek, blunt style of '90s. You get the best of both worlds: blunt chicness as well as a messy, effortless wash-and-go style, said Salcedo of the cut. [It's best for] someone with medium to fine hair who is looking to make their hair feel fuller.

The bob is also a gorgeous protective hairstyle for natural hair when boxed braids are incorporated. People love this hairstyle, said Tanasia of the boxed braid bob. The short length of the braids give them an edgy look. They are also comfortable and weightless.
If you're not ready to make a big chop, one cut that adds fullness and gives you an instant change is what Salcedo calls Babe Bangs. (Many would refer to this look as the Bardot hairstyle.) Because of its ease, you are able to get a big change without compromising so much length, and did I mention fullness? said Salcedo. Who doesn't want their hair to be full? This is one of the most versatile haircuts. Girls with fine hair can make their hair look fuller; girls with lots of hair can remove weight and end up with tousled layers.
To achieve the look, he said the focus isn't so much on the products; it's mostly the haircut. Ask your stylist for internal layers. This will allow the hair to be voluminous from the inside, requiring only a tiny amount of dry shampoo or texture spray for an extra 'oomph.' Another style that incorporates bangs is the shag. The shag is great for people who have waves and texture, said Tran. Straight texture is fine too, but waves are ideal.
