Natural Hair Styles With Eco Styler Gel

It looks like the natural hair care community has made a decision!Eco styler gel has been voted off the island. Recently, videos all over youtube have surfaced and many are expressing their thoughts on the subject. Our naturals are sharing their concerns, and cariogenic effects and their harmful properties. I knew this was going to happen eventually. I am not going say I haven’t circulated a few coins in this product. Personally, I was not impressed with the product and what it did in my hair. We may love the end results of having your edges laid and your baby hair’s acting right but at what expense?

Being educated and working in the healthcare field this is very concerning. I read the ingredients and wasn’t impressed or surprised what was listed. We should be just as health-conscious of our bodies concerning what we consume and place on it. I remember getting some solid advice, which stated “ If you won't put it on your skin don’t put in on your hair. Arm yourself with the information so you can make the best hair care products decisions for your natural hair.

Now I have done a little bit of research, and the FDA approves these ingredients. They claim no more than 5% should be in one product. If you are applying this product over a long period of time, imagine what you are doing to your hair, skin, and body with chronic exposure. Although, Eco Styler gel states that only use 1% of these ingredients in their hair care products. One percent is too much for me. I rather use alternatives that are much healthier and better for me. Side effects along with the chemical names are listed below!

My Final Thoughts On Eco Styler Gel

The Eco Styler Gel Line Up is a fan favorite amongst naturalistas. If you’ve been around since I did The Big Chop, then you’d know that I absolutely love the Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel. It gives my coils definition and keeps my style in place for up to weeks. Best of all, it mixes well with other products without leaving a residue or flaking. I use the gel in a lot of my tutorials. Eco recently introduced a few more variations of the famed gel, including the Eco Styler Coconut Oil Gel. I absolutely love coconut oil so this was right up my alley.

Eco

The Eco Styler Coconut Oil Gel is made with pure coconut oil. Coconut oil acts as a humectant and attracts moisture to the scalp and holds it in. The lightweight gel adds moisture and shine to the hair while holding your style in place.

It’s a little heavier than the Olive Oil Gel and mixing it with certain products will leave a white cast on the hair. With practice though, I’ve been able to perfect a couple of styles using the Eco Styler Coconut Oil Gel. First, the Wash and Go. I co-washed my hair and applied a generous amount of Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture Conditioner. Then making sure my hair was soaking wet, I shingled the Coconut Oil Gel through my hair in small sections. My coils came out poppin’.

Another style I tried using the gel is a Bantu Knot Out. I did my bantu knots using the Eco Styler Coconut Oil Gel along with SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé. I left the knots in for a few days. When I took out the knots, my Bantu Knot Out had lots of volume and definition.

Overall, my hair really likes the new Eco Styler Coconut Oil Gel. It doesn’t take the place of my fave- Eco Styler Oilve Oil Gel. But it gets the job done and leaves my hair looking good. That’s a A in my book!

Which variety of Eco Styler Gel do you use on your natural hair? The product(s) in this post was purchased with my own money.  See my Disclosure page for additional information.Let me stop riiiiiight there. I really can't stand that song, but it made it's way onto my Spotify gym playlist, sooo....there's that. Actually, the inspiration for this post (and the graphic, of course) came to me as I was on the treadmill listening to this very song. After hitting my cardio, I went to the restroom, and as I was washing my hands, I checked the mirror. My wash and go curls were still on point, even though I had been sweating like a crazy woman. I said to myself, Okay Eco Styler, I see you!, and went on about my workout. When I got home, my curls were still standing. Next day, same thing. Day after that, same thing.

Then it hit me -- I'm in LOVE with Ecoco! (by the way, Ecoco Inc. is the name of the company behind Eco Styler.)

Because the intensity of my workouts has increased something serious, I've found myself in a must-wash situation by day 3, and sometimes day 2. I don't sweat a whole lot in my scalp, but sometimes my beloved curl definers can't keep up with the demands of 30-40 minutes of intense cardio, 45 minutes of weight training, and sauna time. This week, I was forced to face a hard truth (that I had been trying to avoid): Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel just might be my HG curl definer for 2015.

Before I sat down to write this post, I thought long and hard about what I was going to say. Yes, 75% if the YouTube tutorials I see for wash and go's involve Eco Styler Gel. Heck, MahoganyCurls dedicated an entire video to decoding the different colors and hold levels. But I wanted to be above the fray (so to speak), and I became obsessed with finding other gels that would work just as well (if not better) than Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel. And the truth is, although I would stray (and develop an affinity for some other gels, like these here from my Christina's Choice 2014 list), I could never be without a jar of Eco Styler on hand. It was my constant, my no-fail gel.

Eco Style Olive Oil Styling Gel 32oz

I thought of every reason why I could dislike or discount Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel -- and those same things I thought were wrong with Eco Styler, were the very things that made it so right for my hair. Eco Styler is much different from botanical gels -- it contains lots of synthetic ingredients. As it turns out, that's okay, because the price point of the gel aligns with the product composition. Translation: the source materials for the gel are inexpensive, and the gel itself is well, inexpensive to purchase as a result. Eco Styler is also a carbomer-based gel (which makes it super thick), and although some folks aren't fans (preferring aloe-based gels and the like), carbomer is just fine by me. In fact, I've discovered that carbomer-containing gels work best on my hair -- providing that plumped curl definition that I love. The fact that there's very little argan oil in the gel doesn't bother me -- it just is what it is. For $6 and 32oz, I won't complain.

When I first reviewed Eco Styler Argan Oil Gel wayyyy back in March of 2012, I was transitioning and only looking at the gel through the lens of being an edge tamer. Three years later, I'm using it to make my curls pop. Admittedly, once I apply the gel, my curls look weighed down and stringy, but when they air dry, something magical
