I know, yarn is not even expected to do grown up hairstyles and it’s normally relegated to Benny and Betty, a primary school hairstyle aka African threading. But with some creativity, yarn can be used to create really stylish, fit for adults hairstyles. With natural hair, creativity is not what we struggle with, not at all. And when done right, yarn hairstyles can be very good protective hairstyles and can be kept in for 3 weeks or more.
What kind of yarn can be used for hair styling? That’s the question I am asked most of the time when I do a yarn hairstyle. Well, any yarn really and any colour for that matter. I mostly use 3 ply yarn that is normally used for knitting jerseys and also Brazilian wool. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but that’s a post for another day.

Simple Benny Betty with some synthetic hair extensions. This is easy to do and the longer hair makes it more presentable and can be worn by adults and kids alike.
Amabhanzi: The Return!
Faux locs using Brazilian wool. These faux locs are so light weight. The only setback is that they take long to install. Otherwise, once you have them on, you will enjoy them. Another thing, make sure not to have them made too tight.
Yarn twists are just amazing and I could do these over and over again. These can be done using either Brazilian wool or knitting wool. Both ways come out really great.
I have fallen in love with these long bulky Yarn twists. However, knowing yarn twists, don’t even think about washing your hair while you have these on if you still want to live. The yarn becomes so heavy when drenched in water it will literally break your neck if it’s this much. Don’t they look amazing though?

Yarn twists can be enjoyed in an assortment of colours as well. I can’t get enough of these pink ones. They look so neat and chic.
Yarn braids are also a great style choice. It’s a great protective style and can be done either long, short, think or thin.
African threading can be worn easily to the office. Styled well and done in a way that brings out the face profile and the professional in you.
Protective Style: Brazilian Wool Braid With Loose Tips
I love these flat twisted African threading that I saw on the Latore page, a hair salon in Pretoria. So beautiful. Can’t wait to try these. Very artistic.
The flat twisted African threading can also be done as an updo hairstyle. I love how this one from Nashe Hair Studio came out.
Another hairstyle choice using yarn is to do them with a needle. Although it may require some skill to do them, they are artistic and stay longer than cornrows on the hair. Also suitable for those with shorter hair. I have a whole playlist on my channel on how to do needle and thread cornrows and flat twists. Here is one of my latest videos.

Which one is your favourite yarn hairstyle? I would live to know. I am eyeing the very colourful yarn twists as my next protective style. I want to do them quite thin though because I just can’t deal with bulky hair of late.

Brazilian faux locs take a lot of time to install. I’m talking real hours here. The ones I did on my hair some time back took me 10 hours in total to get them done. But I have since modified that method considering I now have a salon, a hair studio as I like to call it because I consider hairdressing as an art. In the studio, time is of much essence. Especially for the client considering there are no big breaks in between. You know how your bum can get so sore when you’re having your hair done? Yeah, we try and reduce that part as well. So, I came up with this method of installing faux locs which does not half the time it takes to do them, (how I wish) but it does reduce the time significantly and there is no pain involved. This method can also be used when doing faux locks with kinky twist or Marley hair.
New Hair Trend: Brazilian Wool Braids
Enough of my chit chat. Let me explain this method. If you watch the video below, you will see clearly what I do. Basically, I section the hair, the size desired and then I braid each section for about 5cm depending on the length of the hair. Then I use a crochet latch hook to run the hair extension (Brazilian wool in this case) under the braid. I make the one side longer than the other and the longer side is what I use for wrapping the shorter side and the hair together. When at the end, I take one thread like I showed you in the first video I did on faux locks and then make a knot so that my wrapping does not unravel. I may make several knots just to be sure. If I’m burning the ends, then I cut the rest of the undone extension and burn the ends. But if not, I curl the ends either using perm rods, twisting the hair on its own or flexi rods and then dipping the wool in hot water just like with kanekalon fibre. That simple. In any case, watch the video so you can see how I do faux locs using Brazilian Wool hair.

These styles are easier to make and come in various colours that fit different tastes. They can also blend effortlessly with natural hair, allowing women to wear them based on the occasion or season. While many wool hairstyles are making headlines in the fashion industry, the Brazilian wool hairstyles are the most popular in Nigeria today.
Brazilian wool hairstyles are perfect for women who want to bring out their distinctive feminine charms. The wool has soft texture, allowing the stylist to manipulate it into different trending styles. Unlike other expensive hair extensions, it is also cheap and easy to maintain, making it readily affordable to any lady who changes her looks regularly.

While different cornrow styles are popular in Nigeria today, the most trending is the underhand technique that involves braiding the hair upward and close to the scalp to make continuous raised rows.
Popular Brazilian wool cornrow hairstyles include pigtail, high ponytail, sunbeam, alternating thick and thin, and beaded straight cornrows. Short, long, and medium cornrow hairstyles look stunning when accessorized with matching jewellery such as gold strings.
Since cornrows offer endless possibilities to style them, there is no doubt that they can fit both men and women of all ages.

It is easier to control the thickness of Brazilian wool braids and create different styles such as thick box braids, micro-braided bobs, braided high buns, knotless braids, contrasting twist braids, embellished braided lobs, and classic braids.
Nigerian ladies can pick colourful braids such as brown, green, pink, or a blend of colours. They can also use short, medium, or long braids and finish them with their preferred accessories.
